There are very few liveforms, that can keep growing on the side of a rock exposed to the breakers.
The exception is made by Patella snails (those greenish stains on a light stone), and seaurchins, who are abled to stay on a vertical surface by sucking to it with their ambulacral (tube) feet. In case of roughness they sprawl and put struts with their spines.
