Halocynthia papillosa ascidia, in other words a sea squirt, belongs to the phylum of Chordata, so it may be considered as a distant relative of vertebrates.
Tunicates can be solitary (simple) and are called monascidia, or colonial (complex) entitled synascidia in that case.
