Hermit crabs use abandoned helix shells to hide their vulnerable tender abdomen. With the time shell gets too small for the crab, so it searches for the larger one and moves to it after a moulting (called Ecdysis in arthropods).

This hermit has occupied a fairly gross shell of Hexaplex trunculus murex snail.
